Shoji Fujita / 藤田祥司

Born in 1967, I graduated from Tokyo Polytechnic University.
After working as an assistant to a nature photographer, I traveled to the United States in 1992.
While journeying across the country, I produced works that explored the theme of light in both urban and natural settings.
After returning to Japan, I settled in Hokkaido, where the natural environment allowed me to further my artistic exploration.
Later I relocated to Yokohama, focusing on urban landscapes and architecture,
and I have been active in the fields of photography and video for more than 38 years.

Building on the recognition I have received in international competitions,
I continue to create fine art works and pursue the evolution of my artistic expression.

Main Themes

Urban landscapes, architecture, and the transformation of light and color.

Artist’s Note

It all began with a white wall. Though painted white, the wall shifted into countless shades under the play of shadows. From that moment, I became fascinated by how the same building, seen from the same angle, could appear entirely different as sunlight transformed its surface.

藤田祥司（ふじたしょうじ）

1967年生まれ。東京工芸大学卒業（旧・写大）卒業後、自然写真家のアシスタントを経て1992年に渡米。
アメリカ各地を旅しながら撮影を重ね、都市と自然の光をテーマに作品を制作。
帰国後は北海道に拠点を置き、自然環境を活かして表現を探求。
横浜に拠点を移し、都市景観や建築をテーマとした作品に取り組み、
写真と映像の分野で38年以上活動中。

国際コンペティションで評価された経験を土台に、
芸術作品の制作を継続し、表現の深化を目指しています。

主なテーマ

都市景観、建築、光と色彩の変容。

アーティストノート

すべての始まりは一枚の白い壁でした。白であるはずの壁が、影によって無限の色合いに変わって見えたのです。その体験から、同じ建物でも、同じ視点でも、太陽の光によって全く異なる表情を見せることに魅了されました。

やがてその興味は都市の建築へと向かい、ビルの外壁が朝夕の光や影によって日々変化する姿を記録し続けています。そこには、人間の営みと自然の光が織りなす、決して同じ瞬間を繰り返さない都市の詩があります。
